The Lewitz region and the "Griese Gegend"

Lewitz und Griese Gegend

The Lewitz is a natural Eden, stretching between Schwerin in the north and the town Neustadt-Glewe in the south. It covers about 12.000 hectares of open space, large parts of which have been reshaped by human hand. What used to be an almost impassable marshland today is characterised by vast meadows, woods, carp ponds and countless canals.

In the old Slavonic language the word “Lewitz” (Wendish: “lowit”) meant ‘animal territory’ or ‘hunting ground’, which is still true of the area. The entire nature reserve is characterised by its biodiversity and especially the bird sanctuaries attract nature lovers from all over Europe. Carps are a specialty of the region. Fish-farming flourishes here and almost 800 hectares of the area are covered with carp ponds.

This green oasis is well worth a visit. Whether you want to discover it on foot, by bike or by boat - there is something for everyone. You are invited to follow the tracks of its fascinating cultural history and visit the major landmarks. Within the reserve there are the “Wiesenmeisterei Tuckhude” (camping, holiday apartments and educational programmes), the castle in Neustadt-Glewe and various idyllic villages. In 2009 the region will become one of the external sites of the BUGA (National Horticultural Exhibition in Schwerin) and offer many culture- and nature-related events.
